This early photo is labeled as a gravel pit at mile 6:
It shows a steel bodied Atlantic steam shovel, This may have been brought over to Cordova from an earlier attempt to build a railroad up the east bank of the Copper River from Katalla, It was later lettered for the CR&NW as X33. Note the ubiquitous steel flatcars, this time with low side boards in gravel service.
Gravel will be very important for construction over the next 50 miles or so. Note in the photo just above that the Rodger ballast cars we saw earlier in Cordova are also being used in gravel service.
