Mile 145 to Mile 190

Several key locations along this part of the route aren't clearly identified by mile. I've tried to give approximate mileage, but I'm ready to stand corrected by anyone with better information.

A shot identified as mile 145, possibly past the Kuskulana bridge:

This is a Hegg photo labeled in the Alaska Digital Archives as McCarthy bridge construction.

A commenter suggests this may actually be the Copper River crossing at Chitina, but the 4% approach on that bridge is not apparent here.

  1. The Nizina River I believe is labeled correctly in the original image. I've never seen any evidence that the McCarthy crossing had any truss segments in it - just a plain old pile trestle. Plus, McCarthy wouldn't have had that steep bluff approach on the side that needed the big spans.

    However, it's a dead ringer for an early version of the road bridge across the Nizina to the southwest of McCarthy. This would have been in the early days, where there were only the two wooden truss spans. Later, three steel spans were added to the south end of the two wooden spans. The three steel spans still stand today, isolated out in the middle of the riverbed.

  2. Likewise, I'd guess that the construction shot is of the third Copper crossing at Chitina, looking back towards town. The rock formations and the general alignment of the grade look right for it, and that lump of a hill on the far left looks like the bluff between Town Lake and the Copper River.
